Supporting Pennsylvania's Veterans

Governor Corbett served his Commonwealth and country for 13 years as a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 28th Infantry Division, retiring in 1984 at the rank of Captain. Governor Corbett understands the need to support the mission, service and sacrifice of Pennsylvania’s active military, National Guard and nearly 1 million veterans. And as Governor, he’s working hard everyday to make sure that these veterans receive the benefits and opportunity they so greatly deserve.

• Governor Corbett established the Military Community Protection Commission — led by Lt. Governor Jim Cawley — to proactively protect Pennsylvania's military institutions and community from future funding decisions made at the federal level.
• Governor Corbett authorized the Veterans’ Trust Fund in 2012, raising public and private funds and donations to support Pennsylvania veterans and their families by assisting veteran-focused charities, service organizations and county veterans’ affairs departments.
• He authorized Pennsylvania’s “Honoring Our Veterans” license plate to allow Pennsylvanians to show public support and a veteran’s designation on Pennsylvania driver’s licenses and photo IDs.
• Governor Corbett has supported educational incentives for those who commit to serving with the National Guard, and has standardized and simplified the process to ease voting procedures for our service members abroad, so that they can participate in the democratic process they have tirelessly defended in battle.
• Governor Corbett expanded state contracting opportunities for veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses, educating those businesses about the application process, and encouraging consumer participation, and has supported efforts to encourage the hiring of returning veterans and the development of job training programs to translate valuable military skills into a civil career.
• Governor Corbett established the Governor’s Advisory Council on Veterans’ Services to encourage government entities to cooperate in sharing information and enhancing access to services for Pennsylvania veterans.

Governor Corbett has promised to fight for Pennsylvania veterans, and it’s a promise he’s kept.
